Jonas Staal: Not Guilty!

Rotterdam based artist Jonas Staal was found not guilty today by the Rotterdam Court of threatening Dutch politician Geert Wilders.
Staal erected a series of roadside memorials to Geert Wilders in 2005. These “Geert Wilders Works” question the role of politicians and press use of images to tap into public hysteria, evident in this country in recent years.
Wilders is an extreme right politician, constantly seeking media attention with sordid attacks on his favorite enemy: Islam. This week he made the news proposing the Koran be banned because it is ‘an evil book’ he even managed to compare to Mein Kampf. Wilders made a career out of championing xenophobes. Suing someone for threatening him is right up his alley. He said the fake roadside memorials felt like a bullit-letter to him.
Two weeks ago the prosecutor demanded Staal be sentenced to 240 hours community service and 6 months conditional prison sentence but today the Court ruled they did not find any evidence the artworks were threatening and acquitted Staal. The prosecutor said they will raise an appeal.

W139 presents: OORBEEK

W139 presents:
OORBEEK: Life in a Lamp
Improv-art band Oorbeek will give a one-off performance in a giant lamp – inspired by an idea of Serge Onnen.
Monday 20 August – performance | space opens 20:30 | starts 21:00

This 6×6x3 meter square lamp will be installed in W139 and Oorbeek will perform inside it. Wandering around the lamp, the audience will see only the band’s shadows. These shadows are accompanied, live, by a soundtrack. The audience watches a live projection on 4 huge projection screens simultaneously – with no cameras or video projectors involved.
This performance was seven months in the making, and involved the work of guest collaborators light technician Tom Verheijen and dancer Sandrina Lindgren. Previous Oorbeek performance venues include the Stedelijk Museum, Mediamatic, Bimhuis, Vondelpark Open Air Theatre, Stroom, Paradiso, and Urban Explorer Festival in Dordrecht. The band consists of artists, curators and theoreticians.
To mark the event, the band’s latest single, “Jawache”, will see the light of day!
