WHAT’S THAT ??????

The Spreekselreeksen or Speech Series is a series of multimedia readings presented as performances. One speaker – artist, philosopher, musician, filmmaker, journalist – is called upon to present a statement to our audience based on totally unique scholarly / historical / cultural research and themes.

The series is initiated by Extrapool, Nijmegen and a coöperation with DE PLAYER, Rotterdam and your space, Eindhoven.

WHO’S PAUL BOGAERS ?????

Paul Bogaers (1961) is an artist, writer, photographer, but everything for him begins with collecting. He collects images from books, amateur snapshots, and newspaper photos, but he also considers his own photos as part of the act of collecting. Images, both his own and found, are allowed to fall into place in combinations and collages that create new meanings where association and suggestion  play important roles.

He employed similar methods to produce his “collage novel” Underneath, which appeared two years ago. This novel contains not a single line written by Bogaers himself. It is a 400-page book comprised entirely of found citations, collected from some 250 old books (with titles such as Difficult Girls, Encounters with Clairvoyants, How to Learn to Juggle and Forty Years of Being a Detective), that were rearranged by him to create a grotesque, hilarious but also meaningful story. This literary tour de force took fifteen years to complete.

On this premiere evening of the Spreekselreeksen [Speech Series], Paul  Bogaers will take us on a guided tour around the world. He will tell us and show us how his work came into being. It will also feature commentary on his trip through the former Insulinde [The Dutch East Indies or Indonesia], which he will interweave into the main story line. He will possibly also do some paranormal readings of photographs that audience members will bring with them.

Paul Bogaers’s website includes a series of beautiful photos, among other things.

MAMA presents: For Security Reasons
Opening: Friday 28 August 19:00 – 23:00 (all welcome)
Artists: Stylianos Schicho (AT), Jeroen Jongeleen (NL), SpY (ES), Harmen de Hoop (NL), Antoine Schmitt (FR), Desiree Palmen (NL), Fabian Bechtle/Stefan Reuter (DE), Sander Veenhof (NL)
Location: Showroom MAMA, Witte de Withstraat 29-31, Rotterdam

For many people security measures are experienced as positive and effective. However
well intended though, they limit our actions. The exhibition ‘For Security Reasons’
investigates the balance between safety and playfulness and displays a critical point of
view on the latest developments in security. The exhibited art shows where there is space
for playfulness in a society where security measures are more or less inviolable.

Especially for this show Stylianos Schicho stayed in Rotterdam For three weeks to create
a new piece of work. During the opening Jeroen Jongeleen will also show commissioned
work.

For Security Reasons is compiled by the first collection of curators of the Rookies MA course
(the continuation of the Mr Miyagi course): Tim Braakman, Marieke de Rooij and Aline
Yntema.

Extra activities:
11 September 2009, Gay Palace, 23:00-4:00, The official De Wereld van Witte de With party

Vogelhotel

Vogelhotel
