In September 2008 WORM will pay tribute to the Dutch artist Wim T. Schippers: a slash-artist avant la lettre (from the sixties up until now) who is widely known in Holland for his predominantly absurdist works for TV, radio, theatre and fine arts. His works include a.o. ‘big purple chair in a parc to ruin the environment’, ‘pouring the content of a bottle of soft drink into the sea’ and a ‘floor of peanut butter in a museum’. Schippers also was the creator of a regular radioshow (in which he drove co-actors and listeners alike totally crazy) and a ‘dramady’ on national television.

We honour this artist by a remake of his obscure album ‘Hark!’ from 1980, and a project we call: ‘ALL READY MADES’.

For the latter, we want to invite artists from various backgrounds to contribute (pieces of) unfinished material, ‘killed darlings’, lost tapes, unused data, half-products, etc. It could be either pictures, film, audio, software or text. The materials will be then used to create one (or more) new works.

The idea of the project has grown by realizing that lots of material is lost in all kinds of processes and decision making. It also fits in our policy of recycling and re-using (in order to reduce waste) and the idea that working with already shaped material brings one to new ideas, new horizons and different work routines.

The rules / guidelines:
the artist retains ownership of the contributed material(s)
we can do whatever we want with the materials (no limitations)

Because we don’t know what we can expect, we can not predict the outcome of the project. It could be a concert, a film, an installation or maybe a variety of these things. The project is executed by the WORM team with the help of a few artists we will invite in September.

Last weekend it was three years ago that Jos van der Meulen presented me with his sourdough breadbakin’ culture*. It’s still alive and well, sitting in the vacinity of the heater in my kitchen where its always cosy and warm. I did countless breads with it. No matter what type of flour you try or what you fill it with, they’re always very tasty. The most special breads I did were small breads with a filling of minced meat or white cheese and pinenuts or bakkeljauw,tomato and olive (bakkeljouw is dried salted cod which is popular in the Surinam kitchen). Something very very good happens to the sourdough when the fat and moisture from the meat, cheese or fish seeps and steams through whilst baking.
Keeping the bacteria alive all this time is quite an achievement I think. It is fitting that on this occasion I have found a fresh deciple to enter into the bakers guild: Marc Claeijs from den Haag. Here are his first results:

Technisch zijn ze hardstikke goed, de smaak is fantastisch. Qua vorm kan er nog wel een en ander gebeuren, Alhoewel 2 wel een bijzondere was, die was trouwens gevuld met stukjes versuikerde sinaasappelschillen
en rozijnen, ook 100 gram molenkorn er door gemikt. Wat een genoegen om je eigen brood te eten. Oh ja zijn a mano, die broodmachine staat nog in de kast. Ik heb alweer zin om de volgende te maken. groeten Marc

Needless to say i’m very proud of him! Marc is very serious about it, I think he bought about thirty kilos of different flours at my local windmill, the Distilleerketel, last saturday.
As mentioned the culture was given to me by Jos van der Meulen, a fellow artist from Rotterdam. The occasion was the Composed/Compost show at the Vrije Schuur in Rotterdam Noord, kindly hosted by Arnols Schalks. The shows theme was decay and rotting in style. All artworks present were composted after the show. An other special feature of the show was Wim van Egmonds ‘Microbial Art Climatological Analysis’. Wim has managed to develop a formal and completely objective way to qualify artworks based on the microbes he finds on them. Here is a link to his report on my work. The microbes critique can be pretty harsh btw!
Jos van der Meulen was present at Composed/Compost with a selection of his recycle artprojects and with his sourdough, complete with a discription printed on recycled poster material, packaged in envelopes made from a cut-up encyclopedia. All very much Josje-style. If you would also like to start baking your own bread (cheap, easy and delicious!) you could contact Josje to obtain his Pain-au-Levain folder (Dutch!) or you could pay me (or Marc) a visit and pick up a sample of the zuurdesum culture.

Ik ga in een paar artikeltjes verslag doen van mijn ervaringen met het opzetten van dit blog. Ik had geen eerdere ervaring met het bouwen van een pagina met gescheiden inhoud en vormgeving. Wie net als ik zin heeft om zelf te bepalen hoe zijn blog eruit ziet en daarvoor iets te weten wil komen over php en css heeft misschien iets aan mijn ervaringen.

Hieronder beschrijf ik hoe ik tot de ruwe opzet van dit blog gekomen ben. De echte vormgeving moet nog komen.

Wordpress is een softwarepakket waarmee je je eigen weblog kunt opzetten en aansturen. Wordpress is gratis en toepassingen die er voor ontwikkeld zijn worden in principe ook gratis aangeboden. Er is ontzettend veel mogelijk.
Om de WordPress software te kunnen gebruiken moest mijn server aan bepaalde eisen voldoen zodat ik een database kon draaien. Ik ben klant van Hostingdiscounter waar al een geschikt pakket wordt aangeboden vanaf 1€ per maand. Dus duur hoeft het niet te zijn. Op deze pagina staat waar je server aan moet voldoen: nl.wordpress.net/over/vereisten
Als FTP programma gebruik ik FileZilla. Om bestanden te kunnen schrijven en aanpassen gebruik ik Notepad. Je kunt geen Word en dergelijke gebruiken omdat die zelfstandig allerlei zaken aan je tekst toevoegt waardoor de code in de war wordt geschopt.
Het Wordpresspakket is hier op te halen: www.wordpress.org. Het installeren van Wordpress ging bij mij redelijk soepel. Het enige dat het niet deed was de image-upload functie via admin. Ik vind het wel belangrijk dat die het gaat doen en ik heb alle forums uitgevlooid en alle mogelijke oplossingen uitgeprobeerd maar… helaas!  Die doet het nog niet dus ik moet voorlopig mijn plaatjes nog FTP-en.
# WP-Themes.
Wie geen zin heeft om tijd te steken in de vormgeving van zijn blog kan WP installeren en een flitsende kant-en-klare layout uitkiezen in de WP-Theme archieven (bijvoorbeeld hier). Op deze manier heb je in no time een werkend blog dat er goed uitziet en goed werkt. Als je een gratis theme elders van het internet haalt moet je wel uitkijken voor ingebouwde reclameboodschappen en dergelijke.
Maar het is natuurlijk veel leuker en echter om zelf te bepalen hoe je blog eruit ziet.
# Je eigen Theme bouwen
Het blijkt helemaal niet moeilijk te zijn om een eigen theme te maken. Met de stoomtutorial achter de onderstaande link leer je de basisstructuur van een blog kennen door deze zelf te schrijven in php. Met de hand!

De grote vorm wordt dus door php bepaald, door de volgorde van de objecten waar de pagina uit bestaat en door de volgorde waarin de verschillende functies worden opgeroepen in die objecten. De rest maak je met CSS in het style-sheet. Na het bovenstaande tutorial heb ik allereerst mijn sidebar naar links gehaald door door in index.php de tekst mbt de sidebar bovenaan net onder de header te zetten. Hierna ging ik aan de slag met style.css.
# Vormgeven in CSS
De wpdesigner tutorial geeft een introductie tot css en verwijst verder naar w3schools.com/css voor tutorials en informatie. Ik volg twee benaderingen bij het ontwikkelen van mijn style sheet. Aan de ene kant probeer ik door stapsgewijs te experimenteren al spelend tot leuke oplossingen te komen. Hierbij probeer ik per stap het stylesheet uit in IE en Firefox zodat ik altijd maar 1 stap terug hoef te gaan als het in de soep loopt. Anderzijds kijk ik naar de vele gratis themes naar nuttige aspecten. De grap is nu eenvoudig terug te vinden in het bij de theme meegeleverde css bestand.
#Toeters en bellen
Door middel van Plugins zijn eenvoudig vele functies aan je blog toe te voegen.
Ze zijn bijvoorbeeld te vinden op wp-plugins.net
Het is aan te raden voor iedere functies meerdere plugins uit te proberen want er is veel verschil in kwaliteit. Kijk uit met plugins waarvoor je aan je php bestanden moet gaan rommelen. Het kan zinvol zijn om te kijken welke plugins door andere gebruikers worden aangeraden: www.google.com/search?q=best+wp+plugins…. Ik heb inmiddels de volgende functies geïnstalleerd:
> Akismet (tegen comments spam, standaard meegeleverd. Je moet je wel aanmelden om het te activeren)
> Ultimate Tag Warrior
> Get Recent Comments
> Easy Tube (voor het integreren van YouTube video’s. Hier ben ik nog niet helemaal tevreden over omdat er altijd een irritant wit randje om de video blijft staan{update: Paul Bain heeft dit verholpen in de laatste versie!})
Ik zoek nog een goede plugin voor statistieken. heeft iemand een tip?

In een volgende post meer plugins en hopelijk heb ik dan iets interessants te melden over vormgeving.

I’m going to report on my progress building this blog. I had no previous experience in handling content and design separately. One that likes to determine the look of ones blog themselves like me and wants to find out about php and css might benefit from my adventures.

Below I’ll describe how the rough shape of this blog came about. I still need to get started on the final design.

Wordpress is software that lets you construct and run your own weblog. Wordpress is free and  applications developed for it  are mostly offered free of charge. Possibilities are endless.
To be able to run WordPress software my server needed to meet certain demands for it to facilitate a database. I’m a customer at Hostingdiscounter who offer a suitable  package from 1€ a month. So it does not have to be expensive. This page states a list of server specifications: wordpress.org/about/requirements
As an FTP program I’m using FileZilla. To write or adapt files I use Notepad. Word and such are useless because they will automatically add stuff and mess up your code.
Pick up Wordpress here: www.wordpress.org. Installing Wordpress was smooth enough. The only thing I couldn’t get to work was image-upload through admin. It’s important for me to get it to work so I spent a long time trying possible solutions described in the forums but… alas! Doesn’t work still so I’ll be FTP-ing my images for the time being. 
# WP-Themes.
If you don’t feel like spending all that time designing your blog you can just swipe a flashy readymade theme from the WP-Theme archives (like this one). This way you’ll have a cool blog up and running in no time. If you find a free theme elsewhere on the net beware of built in ads an such.
But obviously it’s much more fun to determine your blog look yourself!
# Building your own Theme
It turns out to be fairly easy to build your own theme. By way of the crash-tutorial behind the following link you learn about the blogs basic structure by writing it yourself. By hand!

So the overall structure is set by php, through the order of the objects on the page and through the order in which the blogs functions are called for within these objects. The rest is done in CSS in the style-sheet.  After completing the tutorial I first moved my sidebar to the left by altering index.php through moving the code referring to the sidebar up the page to just below the code referring to the header.
After that it was time to tinker with .css.
# Designing in CSS
The wpdesigner tutorial provides us with an introduction to css and points to w3schools.com/css for further tutorials and information. I follow two paths in developing my style sheet. On the one hand I try to come up with fun solutions through phased experimentation. I try out every change in the style sheet immediately in both IE and Firefox so that if things turn out bad I can just retrace my steps. On the other hand I check out nice themes and look through them for anything of interest. If you download the theme you can check the css yourself to see how things got done.
#Gadgets and gismos
You can easily add a wide variety of functions to your blog with Plugins.
You can find them here: wp-plugins.net
It is to be recommended to try several plugins for each desired function because there is a lot of difference in quality.  beware of plugins that desire you to temper with your php files.
It could be very useful to check out plugins recommended by other users: www.google.com/search?q=best+wp+plugins…. By now I got the following functions installed:

> Easy Tube (for embedding YouTube videos. I’m not entirely satisfied with this because it leaves an irritating white space around the video {update: Paul Bain remedied this in the latest version!})
I’m still looking for a good statistics plugin. Tip anyone? 

In a next post more on plugins and hopefully I’ll have something interesting to report on the design issue.
