Hallo Ron.
2023 dual photo challenge: 1) a photo taken in or around your workspace at dawn or twilight 2) a ‘direct sunlight’ backlight-selfie.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE > what tools and materials changed your life? <
I don’t consider paint, brushes and pencils, etc. my favorite tools, as they are more of a necessity. They are part of my life. I was a professor at the Art and Art History Department at the University of Texas at Austin in the United States for six years, where I came to know students at the Cellular and Molecular Science Department. These students formed an experimental group that wanted to combine visual expression with scientific observations. One evening in the week we would have philosophical and practical discussions, together with a professor from the Design Department.
A tool the students introduced me to, which changed my views on my art, was to be working with a SEM microscope. The microscope at the University of Texas was one of the strongest in the United States. It allowed cruising through small objects and details from insects, as if walking through a landscape. These experiments combined with a moment that was of an importance in my life: the discovery I had an attack of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) once, many years ago. I have to be tested for that regularly with MRI scans. It changed my perception completely. It resulted in a vision my work is not a reflection of the world around me, but a reflection of the world inside me. It is no longer: ” Me being in the moment”, but “the moment being in me”. I do no longer want to illustrate the world (even until an abstraction), but to realize it.
A favorite object that is always present in my studio is this painter-smurf. I bought it as a mascot when I moved to Rotterdam in 1992. It traveled with me to Buenos Aires more than twenty years ago and never seems to stop painting since….
I don’t have a hi-fi corner in my studio(s). I listen to music through my Laptop. I do not listen to entire albums, because the advertising between the songs on Youtrube bothers me a lot. I rather play the music clips separate, like a disc jockey at my own work-party….
