TOOLS OF THE TRADE > what tools and materials changed your life? <
1) My favorite tool is something too big to hold. It’s my litho press. I’m in love with litho. Such a stubborn, rich, mysterious medium.
2: This year I got hold of an old amp and double cd deck. I play mostly classical music on it. I also took a spotify account which I now play over this wonderful JBL speaker.
3: As a kid I discovered the Rotring pen and drew a lot of comics with it. It truly heightened the joy of drawing with it’s clear, even deep black lines.
During my recovery from heart failure I couldn’t stand pop music for a while. I discovered the healing qualities of 19th century, early 20th century European chamber music. From there I (re)discovered some later and contemporary composers who write work for piano and ensembles. It was difficult to give Charles Koechlin priority over Gabriël Fauré. I choose the lesser known composer so people might get to know him. This is a nice entry into his work which was for it’s time very adventurous. Thomas Adès is the son of British art historian and specialist on Surrealism Dawn Adès. This piece is as dramatic as it is hilarious. The text is by Tennessee Williams. It’s great to see this piece performed by different soprano’s but I choose the version I got to hear it first by. Alissa Firsova is the daughter of Russian composer Dmitri Smirnov and a great composer in her own right as this piece illustrates. Pop is growing on me a little bit again. For that it’s been the year of ‘The War on Drugs’ with me. This band manages to get me in a very sentimental mood every time I play them. I’m adding their version of The Grateful Dead’s ‘Touch of Gray’. Also I love Mokadelic’s music to ‘Gomorra’ (had a lot of time binge-watching Netflix series) but I have no room to add this to the list.

9: Exuma – The Vision Picked up Exuma’s first record recently at Plaatboef intrigued by the painting on the cover. Have been playing this strange record of Obejah psychedelia many, many times.
10: Nina Simone – Dambala Nina Simone was a Exuma fan apparently, as she covered about 4 of his songs. This is a pretty spooky one!

2: Fancy Space People, space rock collaboration between artist/musician Nora Keyes and Don Bolles, ex drummer of The Germs (here on guitar). From L.A.. No album so far as I know. Could play this song all day long.
3: A punky narrative by multi-meta writer/musician/performer/’web-personality’ Ian Svenonius from Washington DC. He did a memorable gig at PrintRoom this year to promote his new book ‘Censorship Now!’. Many, many albums on K records from Olympia, Washington. This is with one of his many bands: Chain and the Gang.
4: First song from the latest album of Calvin Johnson (founder of K records) as Selector Dub Narcotic. He was touring Europe recently to promote it and I was happy to catch him on the wing for a gig at KABK. Watch out, this song will get stuck in your head!
5: Artist/Musician Arrington de Dionyso used to be in Old Time Religion and went on to form Malaikat al Singa, a band heavily influenced by indonesian music. Both on K Records. Painted Murals at Comet Pizza, the pivot of Pizzagate. I listen a lot to his: Unheard Indonesia, a long impro with Indonesian musicians.
6: Gamelan gives me goosebumps. Pitamaha-Various Gamelan musicians.
7: Angus Mclise – The cloud doctrine. A selection from a large collection of mesmerizing sound experiments by McLise. This must be a collaboration with Tony conrad on violin.
8: More McLise and Conrad from the album Dreamweapon III.
9: Lon Milo Duquette is a musician who left behind his musical career to focus on being a practicing magician and writer on the occult. He is still involved in occult organization OTO, originated by Aleister Crowley. Since a few years he’s picked up his guitar again and records and tours as a singer songwriter. This is from the album Sweet Baba Lon.
10: I love nonsense rhyming like this viral one the kids came home with: The Apple Pen song.
