‘Goedemiddag mevrouw, wat woont u hier prachtig. Wees niet bang, wij komen niets verkopen,’ hoorde ze toen ze de deur opendeed, ‘U hebt een prijs gewonnen.’ Met een grote glimlach keek een jongen in streepjespak haar aan. Op zijn adamsappel zat een marineblauwe vlinderdas. De jongen naast hem had zijn haar strak achterover gekamd. Hij overhandigde haar een groot stuk wit karton waarop met grote letters ‘Prijs’ geschreven stond.
‘Mogen wij even binnenkomen?’ vroeg hij. Ze schudde haar hoofd.
‘Ik heb helemaal nergens aan mee gedaan,’ en wilde de deur weer dichtdoen.
Een glimmende oxfordschoen verhinderde het sluiten. Haar man droeg vroeger ook altijd oxfords. Hij vond derby veterschoenen niet deftig genoeg. Een schoen die zijn tong liet zien vond hij ordinair. Door de oxfordschoen zette ze niet direct door. De jongeman in streepjespak duwde de deur resoluut open en zei dat een neef haar had opgegeven. Ze vroeg zich af welke neef het zou zijn.
‘Misschien kunnen we het beter binnen bespreken.’ …

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Etsmaterialen:
In the third year of artschool I started etching. My teacher was Kees Spermon.
It felt like coming home. The magic of scraping away layers, pickling and printing
was the ideal balance for me between solid craft and creativity with the end result, a print on paper,
as a special gift.

Now I write most of the time short stories.
You can find a few short stories at http://www.pieterdrift.nl/publicaties.html (in Dutch).
Besides writing I mostly draw. I call them drawings because I don’t feel like a painter.
The basis of my drawings is Indian ink and watercolor.
Two materials that can collide and go together. Ideal for me.
